I purchased a Dell laptop with windows 8 pre-installed. Then I upgraded it to windows 8.1 by Windows App Store, everything is fine. Now accidentally I updated the product key (invalid one) and windows got deactivated. Now I want to activate the Windows 8.1, I have genuine Windows 8 OEM key (found using get_win8key program from BIOS). I don't want to Go by installing Windows 8, then upgrading it windows 8.1 then installing all my software again as suggested by Dell. As at the time of upgrade It didn't ask for product key and I assume that program read the key from BIOS itself and Windows 8.1 is activated, so there should be equivalent key to be used to activate windows 8.1 again. Please suggest.
From our experience with Windows 8 upgrades, you're right out of luck. If your Windows 8.1 becomes inactivated for any reason, you can only use an 8.1 key to activate it. The keys are (intentionally) different and incompatible.
No, it didn't read an 8.1 key from anywhere. It just remembered it was activated and (because the Store is secure) it was allowed to stay that way. Upgrades via DVD seem to always finish up deactivated and needing a new key.
Despite having many new features, people still are reluctant to use Windows 8.1 because it is hard to find the activated version. However, this guide can help people, who are interested in using OS, to find an activation key.
As it is a latest and premium version of windows 8.1 thus so as to avail the total and premium options of windows eight you would like a product key thus you will alter the total version of window eight operating for you.
^ Not necessarily! During the 1 year after Win10 launched when Microsoft was offering free Win10 upgrades, users could perform clean installs of Win10 and enter product keys for Win8.1, Win8, or Win7, and Microsoft still activated those installations even though the systems never went through an actual "upgrade". But the OP says that this system was only ever upgraded to Win8.1. That suggests that the free Win10 upgrade was never claimed on that system during the 1-year eligibility period, in which case Win10 would NOT automatically activate on that 8.1 key now.
If you upgrade over a properly activated copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you can run Setup from within your current Windows installation and you will not be prompted to enter a product key. After the upgrade is complete, your new copy of Windows 10 will be activated with what Microsoft calls a "digital license."
If you are using bootable installation media to perform a clean install on a PC that previously had a properly activated copy of Windows 10, you do not need to enter a product key. (When you see the prompt to enter a key, click the I don't have a product key option.)
If you are using bootable installation media to perform a clean install on a PC that has never been upgraded to Windows 10 and activated, you will need to enter a product key. You can enter a product key from Windows 10 or from a matching edition of Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1. Residents of the United States who don't own a qualifying Windows license can skip entering a product key and purchase a license online from the Windows Store after setup is complete.
When you upgrade over an existing, activated copy of Windows, the Setup program checks the current activation status. If it determines the installation is properly activated, it contacts a Microsoft activation server and generates a license certificate that is linked to that hardware. (A Microsoft account is not required for this step; the license is generated for the device, not for its owner.)
After that first activation is complete, you can perform a clean install on that same hardware using Windows 10 installation media. As long as the hardware "fingerprint" matches the previous installation ID, the installation is activated automatically. (Microsoft does not provide details of what goes into the hardware ID, except to confirm that it does not contain any personally identifiable information and is not used for tracking purposes.)

There is a lot of confusion about this license and it is often confused with the OEI license. The true OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) license is a license sold with the PC. It is only used by System Builders with Microsoft. These license keys are digital and integrated into the BIOS of the computer together with the serial of the PC. Often System Builders always use the same Windows 10 code (see DELL, ASUS, ACER etc.). For computers that are born with Windows 10, we find only a Microsoft holographic stamp of originality in front of the PC, without the license key. It cannot be sold separately and the only way to have it is combined with a PC. Only System Builders can, through a national distributor, (list at the bottom of the article) have access to these types of contracts to integrate license keys on PCs. The OEM license of Windows 10 Pro allows the legal downgrade to a previous Pro version of Windows (Windows 7 Pro, Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro). For instructions on how to downgrade properly, just contact your PC manufacturer.
Often when we hear and read about OEM license we are actually talking about an OEI (Delivery Service Partners Original Equipment Installation). A license that can be purchased individually to combine it with a PC. The license is linked to the machine and once activated it is possible to reactivate it only on the same PC. The OEI license is a license that must be purchased by the assemblers who will include it with the PC. The OEI licenses are sold in the DVD package + label with the product key code (commonly called COA). The support is operated by the PC manufacturer, not Microsoft. The Windows 10 Pro OEI license allows for a legal downgrade to an older Pro version of Windows (Windows 7 Pro, Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro). For instructions on how to properly downgrade, just contact the PC manufacturer. ATTENTION to those who only sell you the COA label, these only label licenses are not original. DSP OEI licenses are sold paired with DVD + sticker, while COA labels alone are not legitimate licenses and as such cannot be resold as legitimate Microsoft software.
Only the GGK licenses and the Retail licenses that do not allow the version downgrade in any way remain outside this discussion. To downgrade, and receive the serial of the previous version, there are several procedures, but all refer to the manufacturer and the retailer who will be able to guide you step by step.
If the serial does not activate Windows you must first call the retailer and ask for support, in fact, there are many activation errors that are not related to the code, but simply to overloaded or unreachable servers, missing network drivers, or as it happens often, remnants of system hacking software that do not allow Windows to activate correctly. 2ff7e9595c
